Woman's Club Fundraiser Targets Scholarships

LA MESA -- It was rainy and dreary outside, but in the La Mesa Woman's Club on Wilson Street there was a lot of hot competition Saturday morning.

More than 120 women gathered for a scholarship fundraiser playing either bridge or bunco and, as it turns out, those are very different games.

In the club's more northern room, the bridge players studied their cards quietly, plotting strategy and mulling options.

The club's southern end was filled with bunco players rolling dice, talking loudly and occasionally screaming in delight.

A divider wall separated the contemplative crowd from the most celebratory one, but all eventually came together for a luncheon, which included catering by La Torta and red velvet cake, and to bid on silent auction items.

This scholarship event was one of a number of events at the facility, which the club also rents to other organizations for meetings, weddings and events.

Information on renting the facility can be found at www.lamesawomansclub.com.
