Helix Water District Check Register, Del Mar School District pays big $ for hiding emails!

The LMCOG has obtained the Helix Water District check register for payments of expenses through March 2013. We encourage our local agencies to be forthcoming and timely in request of public records such as these.

The Del Mar union School district recently lost a court case over public records and, sadly, has to use taxpayer money to pay the $42,500 in legal fees of the plaintiff. Let's hope our own local agencies do not ignore the open government and transparency lesson to be learned.

  • "Michael Robertson was declared the prevailing party in a lawsuit he filed to force the Del Mar Union School District to allow him to see emails sent between former District Superintendent James Peabody and former School Board President Comischell Rodriguez. The lawsuit caused the district to produce more than 1,000 pages of records which the district previously claimed did not exist."

This post may lead some to believe the HWD was not forthcoming or timely in requests for public records. We should have said, "We encourage all of our local agencies to be as forthcoming and timely in request of public records such as these." We apologize for the error.
