Police Catch Attention of 69 Distracted Drivers

LA MESA -- If you find yourself stuck behind people chatting on their cell phone and angering you with their erratic speeds, then this was a good day for you.
Police said officers are trying to keep everyone safe on our streets so they are aggressively enforcing the state’s “Distracted Driving” laws conducting the ninth “Traffic Safety Enforcement Program“ operation Friday morning. The program relies on heavy enforcement and public education as a means to help reduce deaths and injuries on our local roadways.

La Mesa Police Officers wrote 69 tickets to persons either talking on their cell phone or texting while they were driving and gave 13 warnings for lesser traffic offenses in a eight hour period on Friday morning. Funding for this operation was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Isn't it amazing how effective La Mesa PD is at giving tickets to people for talking on their cell phone when I see them do it all the time when they are driving in their police cars...  You can't tell me that it is more dangerous for Joe Citizen to be talking on their cell phone than for a police officer...

Every Police Officer has a cell phone and they use it all the time while driving.  Official business my rump, not all of those calls are for business.  I would guess that half of them are chit chatting with friends and family while driving their police cars and on duty.

So how is it that Joe citizen is any more/less guilty than them...

I was talking from home to someone on their way home. She has Bluetooth that she uses to converse on her vehicle that came equipped with it. CHP officer said she was using her handheld. She was not and never does. This Officer was rude to her when she tried to explain that she never uses phone when driving and he said " I don't have time to argue with you" to her. What a racket! Must be a pool going to see who can bully drivers and write the most tickets. Be careful out there Folks!
