Celebrating Students and Remembering De-Segregation
LA MESA -- To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Brown vs. Board of Education decision, La Mesa-Spring Valley School District School Board President Dr. Emma Turner proposed a speech competition for 5th through 8th graders. The winners would be given a scholarship award for future college expenses. To facilitate the event, Dr. Turner and fellow board member Rick Winet donated the money for the scholarship fund. Students competed at elementary and middle schools district-wide, and after a lengthy and difficult judging process, students Ethan Dilgard, Navaeh Bray, Daniel O’Laughlin, and Paolo Paolini were selected as winners.
The winners were honored at a special fundraising event held at the La Mesa Community Center on Monday September 29. Donations from the event will be used for a new scholarship fund for a speech competition to be held in 2015. Dr. Turner would like this to become an annual event for the district to promote civics and history awareness and challenge the writing and public speaking abilities of the students. Monday's event was well attended by an energetic crowd of parents, district teachers and staff, and members of the community. In addition to school board president Turner, board members Bill Baber, Bob Duff, and Jerry Lecko were also in attendance. District Superintendent, Brian Marshall acted as event emcee.
As an additional tribute both to the legacy of the Brown vs. Board of Education ruling and the winners of the speech competition, a local filmmaker, Patrick Goldsberry, donated his time and equipment to create a short video highlighting both the historical relevance of the decision and excerpts from many of the student speeches. This video was premiered at Monday’s event and Mr. Goldsberry was present to accept the thanks of the district and applause from the audience.
