Cosmos Coffee Cafe Changing Hands

LA MESA -- Cosmos Coffee Cafe, since 2004 a central gathering place for La Mesans young and old, is changing hands. Patrick Hoz and Paul Johnson, the two local entrepreneurs who quickly turned the shop into a center for coffee, talk and art, are selling the business and moving on to other ventures. "This was always our plan,'' Johnson said this morning. "We'd build it and sell it. It's time to reinvent ourselves again.''

The new owner, San… Continue

In This Paradise, Much To Be Thankful For

LA MESA -- It is very cold back East. Raining in the South. The Midwest is girding for a deep freeze.

Here, it is sweater weather at worst. The marine layer roles in and gives an excuse to light a fire.

As work stops for a few days, we stroll in sweatsuits, seeing seascape in one direction, majestic mountains in the other.

Even as some of us struggle with the challenges of unemployment and career changes, there is always a reason to give thanks when… Continue

In Election's Wake, A Symbolic Split

LA MESA -- One sensed during the recent election that if Councilwoman Ruth Sterling's efforts to aid challengers didn't succeed, she would find herself even more estranged from the incumbents on the five member body.

It didn't take long.

At the first post-election meeting, weighing the first substantive - albeit small dollar -- issue, the council split 4-1.

Sterling was the one.

Fresh off an election in which Mayor Art Madrid and council members Mark Arapostathis and Ernie… Continue

In One Election's Wake, Another Is Born

CITY HALL -- Bleary eyed from a late night, much of La Mesa's political leadership gathered Wednesday evening to hear Jim Wieboldt, a part of Mayor Art Madrid's "kitchen cabinet,'' announce his candidacy for the 2012 City Council race. Wieboldt acknowledged to a crowd of about 30 supporters that he was announcing "early,'' but he said in a speech that the excesses of the recently completed city elections -- races marked by name calling and alleged… Continue

Wieboldt Takes Aim At Councilwoman Sterling

LA MESA – Even before the final vote totals were tallied in Tuesday’s election, a key supporter of Mayor Art Madrid took aim at one of Madrid’s political opponents.

Jim Wieboldt, a San Diego County Sheriff’s employee and part of Madrid’s kitchen cabinet, filed papers to begin pursuing what he says will be a race against City Council member Ruth Sterling, who would be up for re-election in 2012. Sterling was instrumental in Laura Lothian’s unsuccessful challenge against… Continue

ANALYSIS: Experience Trumped Anti-Incumbent Sentiments

LA MESA – In the end – after weeks of debate and some arguments –voters in the Jewel of the Hills decided to stay the course.

In a year when much of the national politics was dominated by anger and a rejection of incumbents, La Mesa returned to office the mayor who has led it for two decades and two council members who have pursued stability and measured growth.

Still, the leadership that survived a cranky election process comes out the other side still facing the problems… Continue
