City Awards Students, Teachers for Safety Efforts

LA MESA -- If everything goes well, you usually won't hear anything about these people.

The Safety Patrols at local schools win by making sure nothing happens.

So far so good lately, but city officials took a few moments to publicly praise the students and teachers at each local school who have made safety their focus.

Awards of appreciation were awarded students from the following schools (their teachers were named as… Continue

Council Wrestles With Speed Limits, Troublesome Motel

LA MESA - Anyone who drives down Amaya Drive in the morning knows it can be a bit of an adventure.

Trolleys cut off streets, students stream to four different schools and motorists scrambling to get to work can be literally driven to distraction by backups, skateboarders and competing motorists.

One might be confused why the City Council voted to increase the speed limit along a road that can look like a fire drill every morning.

City staff explained that state law requires that… Continue

Music On The Moutain

MT. HELIX -- The East County Youth Symphony performed Sunday before an audience that braved the blustery and unseasonably chilly afternoon weather. However, both the music and the audience's appreciation were warm. Another enjoyable afternoon in one of East County's most pleasant… Continue

LA Mesa Middle School To Rescue Vietnam War Memorial

LA MESA – The Vietnam War Memorial in downtown La Mesa is, in a way, a little like the war itself – left like a memory to fade in the California sunshine. Plants and grasses have died away, trees are in decline. The lights are broken and the mortar and metallic signs are more than showing their age.

On Friday May 21, much of that will begin to change. A group of eighth graders from La Mesa Middle School, spurred on by their teacher to think… Continue

A Quiet Night For La Mesa Leaders

LA MESA -- Tuesday's City Council meeting was as quiet as it was short, ending in less than 90 minutes and with little of the discussion of financial angst that has dominated many recent gatherings of the city leaders.

The agenda did include a second reading of a new ordinance that now officially makes it a violation for dog owners to use city athletic fields to run their dogs. Violators will now be subject to a citation and fines.

Council members, in sympathy with dog owners now… Continue

A Fair to the Taxpayers, Fair to employees pension program for new hires in La Mesa

Today's Council meeting was mostly in closed session with representatives of the four labor unions. There was however a public comment session prior to the closed session. I was the only one there (aside from the City Council/employees) and I don't believe it was broadcast, so I thought you might like to know what I think our Council needs to do about pensions. Here is what I said (please notice my final sentence):

"I am here to again urge you to adopt a revised pension plan for new-hires.… Continue

Cuatro Ways To Avoid Cinco de Mayo Problems

LA MESA -- Can't accuse the La Mesa Police of not playing fair.

With Cinco de Mayo celebrations about to really rev up, police officers are warning local residents that there will be extra troops out watching for drunk drivers tonight.

The press release refers to the police tactic as "DUI Saturation Patrol,'' and perhaps the pun was intended.

"If your Cinco de Mayo turns into a Cinco de Drinko. . . .Please don't drink and drive,'' said Sergent Stoney, in the same… Continue
