Love where you live!
LA MESA -- Police are asking for help from local residents in combatting a spree of late night burglaries at local businesses. Details below in "case highlights." Also, the recent spate of earthquakes in the far East County has officials reminding us all about emergency preparedness. That and the familiar holiday weekend DUI warnings in this week's Weekly Crime Report.
Over the past 2 months, several La Mesa businesses have become victims of burglary. Most of the burglaries have occurred during the overnight hours, when the businesses are closed and dark. There is no distinguishable pattern to these burglaries and they are occurring all over the city. So far, the only suspect information that the Police Department has obtained is from a burglary at the Starbucks located at 8497 Fletcher Parkway. The suspect in that case was a male, 6’1”-6’2” tall, medium build, wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt, black shorts and carrying a black trash bag. Please help our hard working La Mesa business owners by watching out for their properties while they are closed. If you see anything suspicious, such as people loitering in the area, please don’t hesitate to call the La Mesa Police Department.
This upcoming weekend is the Labor Day weekend that often carries “end of summer” celebrations and parties. Please stay safe by planning ahead for a designated driver if your post-party plans include driving. The La Mesa Police Department’s Traffic Unit will have extra officers out on DUI enforcement patrols over the weekend. Additionally, La Mesa Police officers will participate in a joint-agency DUI checkpoint in the East County area.
Crime Prevention/Emergency Preparedness:
Are you prepared for a disaster? Earthquake or firestorm? Consider attending a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) academy. The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness and the hazards that may impact the area they live. These FREE CERT lessons will train you in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. The next class is on Saturday, September 22. For more information, visit www.heartlandfire.org. Under the “Emergency Prep” tab on the home page, select “CERT – 2012”
