Volunteers Needed for Annual 'Red Shoe Day'

LA MESA -- More than 1,000 volunteers are needed to take over San Diego and Imperial County intersections to collect donations that will support San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House® during its second annual Red Shoe Day.

On Wednesday, Sept. 28 from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. “Street Team” volunteers are needed to gather cash donations in iconic size-14 red shoes at major intersections and roadside locations throughout San Diego County.

The charity is looking for volunteer teams from La Mesa to staff the following local intersections.

  • El Cajon Boulevard/Baltimore Drive
  • Grossmont Boulevard/Jackson Drive
  • La Mesa Boulevard/Spring Street
  • University Avenue/70th Street
  • University Avenue/La Mesa Boulevard (east of Spring Street)
  • University Avenue/La Mesa Boulevard (west of Spring Street)
  • University Avenue/Massachuseetts Avenue
  • El Cajon Boulevard/70th Street

For additional intersections, visit www. rmhcsd.org/redshoeday.

Volunteers are encouraged to have fun during their service by wearing crazy wigs, making noise and collecting a “boot-load” of contributions for the charity, which offers a range of services – including food, lodging and emotional support – to the families of critically ill or injured children being treated at San Diego-area hospitals.

In addition to volunteering as a Street Team member, there are a number of ways to participate in the fundraiser:

  • Text Donations – Don’t see a big red shoe on the way to work? Text REDSHOE to 20222 to make a $5 donation.
  • Corporate or “C” Teams – Corporate volunteers can station a red shoe in their lobby, break room or other high-traffic area to raise awareness and collect donations leading up to and on Red Shoe Day on Sept. 28. Corporate participants looking to encourage friendly competition can have internal departments, floors or branches compete to raise the most money.
  • Youth Community Teams – Children or youth groups, churches, troops, schools and individual classes can create their own fundraiser and collect donations leading up to and on Red Shoe Day, Sept. 28.
  • Personalized Fundraising Page – Personalized fundraising pages can be created to ask friends and family to support participants in reaching a fundraising goal.
