New Honor For Local Veterans

FLETCHER PARKWAY -- Local officials, veterans and residents gathered this morning for a fire fighter pancake breakfast before the dedication of Fletcher Parkway in honor of La Mesa veterans of all wars.

Fletcher Parkway will not be changing its name, but the major route will be marked with new signs (see right) honoring the veterans. City Councilman Dave Allan (below), who has spearheaded a year-long effort to honor La Mesa veterans, was welcoming residents at the pancake breakfast which was followed by an official dedication of the roadway at a ceremony at nearby Parkway Middle School.

Nearly 100 people attended the dedication ceremony which featured representatives from the branches of the service and a speech by retired Rear Admiral John McLaughlin, now president and chief executive officer of the U.S.S. Midway Museum in San Diego.

A two bell ceremony was performed and the songs for each branch of the service were played.

The monument signs at either end of Fletcher Parkway were paid for with a combination of more than $12,000 in donations and city matching funds.
