Sterling May Challenge Madrid In Mayor's Race
LA MESA – Art Madrid, the long-time mayor of La Mesa, 
may finally have an opponent in the November election.
Word spread quickly through local political circles today that Ruth Sterling, a current council member who is not facing re-election for her council seat this year, had pulled papers, the first step in preparing for a run for the office.
Sterling has a week to fill out the papers and return them to the clerk’s office.
Sterling was not immediately available for comment but a number of local officials confirmed her actions and expressed surprise at the move. Sterling is often at odds with Madrid on a number of issues, but had made no moves or pursued fundraising that would have suggested she was preparing for a run. Sterling has publicly expressed concern that there appeared to be little interest among local residents or the political community for taking on Madrid or the other two council members up for re-election this cycle.

I wish Ruth well whatever her final decision might be. I believe in the expression of diversity of opinion and honest discussion about policies in local government. I am nervous for any community which is effectively governed by the lack of interest of its members.
