My Little Store

LA MESA -- It has taken me a few days to change my vocabulary regarding where I work.  For almost twenty years, I worked over in the commercial district of La Mesa.  I always referred to where I work as "my office, "  despite the fact that it was mostly warehouse where all my greeting cards and envelopes were stored before being shipped out across the country.  My business was strictly wholesale, so I considered my place of work my office and not my store.

In the years before my Dad died, he frequently expressed his desire that I one day be able to have a little bit of retail space, but as long as I worked on Commercial Street, that desire of his seemed unlikely to come true.  I still remember the last time he told me,

"You should have a storefront.  I think it would be a very good thing."

Sadly, in his lifetime he never saw me hang an OPEN sign on the the window of a store…

I think that the people we love never really leave us.  I feel my father's nearness all the time.  That's why I think that this past Saturday he was was with me as I planted flowers in the little planter (formerly ashtray) outside my new store at 8219 La Mesa Boulevard.  And when I hung the OPEN/CLOSED sign on the door and turned on the new little Christmas lights under the awning,  I could feel his joy.  And it has been my highest pleasure to have had my Mom pop by several times on her morning stroll around our dear Village of La Mesa.

It was my extreme good fortune to be able to lease the charmingly painted and filled-with-peace space that was  Deena While's Reader's Inc.  I know how hard it was for her to leave here, and I hope she knows how grateful I am for all she did to make this such a perfect spot for Lifesighs Cards. It is a dream come true for me, and after twenty-eight years in a business that was largely wholesale, it marks the beginning of a new chapter in Lifesighs' history. ( I know some people who hit that 65 year mark are pondering where to park the Winnebago and which cruises sound better than others, but I decided that since I will work forever, having a store on La Mesa Boulevard would be the very best of worlds for me.)

I expect to be open to the public within two weeks.  Anyone interested in greeting cards or little gift books or boxed Christmas cards can feel free to stop by and say hello.  Just look for the OPEN sign on the door, inside which I hope you will feel the joy I try to put into everything I write and draw.

"Such happiness," my Dad used to say.

It is such happiness, indeed!

This is really cool! "Deena's space" couldn't ask for better people. Good luck!

Thank you to all of you who have commented!  I do cherish your kindness.  I am just now putting a rack of cards up--again, it feels like playing store!  Retail sales should begin next week.  As I have said to some passersby,  I will only be selling cards and a few gift books.  Perhaps in the future there will be more product, but for the present time, it will be a Lifesighs Cards store!   Not so full a selection of goods as a Hallmark Store, but I think you will find that the cards are pretty dear.

Chris, Your enthusiasm is contagious!  I'm glad to hear such a lovely lady is going into a business vacated by another lovely lady who will be missed.  We wish you every success.

Congratulations Chris!  That's great.  I just bought one of your cards from Handful of Flowers last week to give to my friend who just had her 4th baby boy.
