Lemon Grove Fighting Grime, Crime
BROADWAY -- More than 100 residents teamed up Saturday with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department for a combined effort aimed at cleaning up the community and making a public statement against gangs in La Mesa's neighboring city.
Sheriff's Sgt. Christopher Davis said while community groups spread mulch and repainted traffic markings along Broadway, deputies would be concentrating efforts at all trolley stops to meet and engage with known gang members as they made their way through the city.
"We are just making a public statement that this community is not going to make it comfortable for gang mambers to act out their operations in this town,'' Davis said.
Groups from churches and associated with other community organizations worked for hours along Broadway, painting, picking up trash and caring for landscape. Lemon Grove city operations staff worked in tandem with the groups.
