Once More To The Hill

LA MESA -- For the 11th year, La Mesa's Kiwanis Club gathered up a collection of young local residents and took to the slopes running along the La Mesa Middle School property.

The  stakes for the Soap Box Derby were high with the winning racers heading for the national show-down in Akron, Ohio, later in the summer.

After more than a decade, Steve Blake and his team have this event as organized as a NASCAR gathering, with electronic starting signals and an automatic timer at the finish line. A transportation team ferries the young drivers and their cars back to the top of the hill where another team quickly swaps wheels to assure fairness for all the competitors.

The races have become a part of local life on the west side of La Mesa.
