East County Schools Reopen Friday

LA MESA -- A day after wild fires caused all East County schools to close, school officials have decided it is now safe to reopen.

Brian Marshall (right), Superintendent of the La Mesa-Spring Valley School District said officials confirmed by phone and decided that classes would resume Friday morning.

Those schools in the northern parts of San Diego County will remain closed, Marshall said the lack of smoke and fires in the immediate East County area led officials to believe it would be safe to operate the schools.

"If a fire broke out near here with a lot of smoke in the air, we would reconsider," Marshall said "the wind this afternoon is giving me some worries but I think we're OK for now."

This news will come as a relief to parents left to scramble for child care and school officials acknowledge that closing schools is a hardship on many families.
