LA MESA -- There will be no school in La Mesa or East County on Thursday. Dangers from the spate of wildfires has led school officials to close for the day.
Brian Marshall (right), superintendent of schools for La Mesa-Spring Valley School District, said all the school leaders in East County had come to the conclusion that people should stay home as Thursday is expected to be the hottest, driest day of this hot spell and fire fighters are already racing through the streets to answer fire calls. Grossmont Unified High School District has closed for the day as has Santee and other East County schools.
A fire in Lakeside has firefighters battling now and fires throughout the North County are also affecting East County families with jobs and family in those areas.
"We did this back in the 2007 fires,'' Marshall said. "It was the prudent thing to do."
Marshall said officials would evaluate conditions on Thursday before deciding on whether to close schools on Friday as well.
