England Advancing In Assembly Race

LA MESA -- Mary England, the executive director of the La Mesa Chamber of Commerce and a Lemon Grove City Council member, will compete for a state Assembly seat in November's election.

England, a Republican, was in a virtual tie with Democrat Shirley Weber as votes were totaled in Tuesday's primary for the new 79th Assembly District seat.

The district, which has a larger Democratic enrollment, will be a challenge for a Republican in the general election. Of the nearly 48,000 votes cast in Tuesday's primary, more than 27,000 were cast for Democratic candidates compared with just over 20,000 for Republicans.

Unofficial vote totals:

Mary England (GOP) 29.7% 14,220 votes

Matt Mendoza (GOP) 13.5% 6,443 votes

Patricia Washington (Dem) 8.1% 3,896 votes

Rudy Ramirez (Dem) 11.2% 5,348 votes

Shirley Weber (Dem)30.0% 14,380 votes

Sid Voorakkara (Dem) 7.5% 3,594 votes
