LA MESA -- The effort to fund a new Boys & Girls Club on the campus of La Mesa Middle School is taking a different track this week -- literally.
Planners for a 5K Walkathon to be held Saturday were busy meeting Monday morning at Cosmos Coffee Cafe (see photo above) and organizers are still looking for sponsors and walkers.
"Any amount will help the cause,'' Bob Shultz, president of the La Mesa Kiwanis Club said. Other East County Kiwanis Clubs are also participating. A donation of $100 or more will get your name on the Sponsor Board for the day of the walk.
The event, being sponsored by Kiwanis, the Helix High Key Club and the La Mesa Middle School Builders Club, will start at 9 a.m. Saturday on the track at Helix High School. It takes 12.5 laps to reach the 5 kilometer goal.

The Boys & Girls Club project is a community-wide effort to raise the $9-million needed to build a new facility to serve hundreds of youths each day and to refurbish the teen center already located on the La Mesa Middle School campus. Ron and Alice Brady have already pledged $2-million to the project and the new facilities will be named for the Mt. Helix couple. The public phase of the fundraising project has begun with a goal of raising the $4.5 million left toward the goal.
