Kiwanis Member Wins A Pot 'O Gold

LA MESA -- At each La Mesa Kiwanis meeting there is a Pot o' Gold Drawing. It's not an easy win.
First the member has to have their number drawn from among all members and then that winning member has to pick the Jack of Diamonds from a deck of cards.
Mostly, the only winner is the children's charity that takes half the proceeds.
This week, that changed.

Member Walter Shaffer, photographed above with Club President Tony Zambelli (left), had the winning number and picked the Jack of Diamonds to collect half the $400 pot.

The winning number was selected by this week's guest speaker -- Chris Lavin, Editor of LaMesaToday.com.

Lavin, a former Union-Tribune editor, traced for club members the rapid decline of print media and the halting rise of on-line media that hopes to fill the gap.
