Discovering Classic Jewels In These Hills

LA MESA -- Like the subtle changing of the leaves and the arrival of evening chills, the La Mesa Historic Home Tour has become a staple of autumn in the Jewel of the Hills.

Each year's mix of homes shows the surprising diversity and range of creative living spaces that have found a foundation in these hills and valleys.

This year's tour, which happens Saturday, Nov. 2, is a classic example of how many jewels there really are in these hills.

One of the most interesting homes offered in recent years headlines this year's selection as Steve and Connie Garner will be opening the Alphonse D. Fouchy Home in the highlands just up the hill from the Civic Center.

This stunning home captures, both in design and furnishings, the Mediterranean Revival style that was popular when a San Francisco doctor built the home in 1931 for his retirement.

The Garners have done a great job -- even a public service -- in lending their restrained touch to the home, which is worth the price of this tour alone.

Also adding a unique touch to this year's selection of homes is a new arrival to the city's registry of historic homes that will be shown still well under renovation.

Susan Prise, a school counselor and wine bar owner, and Roger Feyen, a general contractor, have stripped a home at 8463 Lemon Avenue nearly down to its 1910 studs and the tour will allow you to peek inside the workings of a 100-year-old home even as its skin is being restored. Counterweights in the windows and open door casements will give a great sense of the care and precision it takes to restore an old home.

The tour will also give the many La Mesans who have never taken the time to visit the Historical Society's McKinney House headquarters a chance to appreciate not only a classic home, but one presented with period details -- right down to the proper spice jars and clothing in the closets.

These are just a few of the homes being offered in this year's tour. For full details click here.
