Police Shoot Armed Assailant

LA MESA — A knife-wielding attacker threatened a 13-year-old girl on Fletcher Parkway just before 9 a.m.  this morning and was eventually confronted by police and shot twice.

Police said the 34-year-old man charged at officers wielding a machette and was subdued by shots from a La Mesa Police officer in the abdoman and arm. Officers instantly applied first aid and the attacker was rushed to surgery and was reported in stable condition this evening.

Police say the incident started with a call that the man had attacked a 13-year-old girl on her way to school and had thrown a pocket knife at her. The girl ran away across Fletcher Parkway and found shelter in a Subway Sandwich shop. Police responding to the call confronted the assailant nearby and found him armed with other knives, including the machette.

The man was identified as Bernard Graham of Spring Valley.  The officer whi fired the shot was put on routine administrative leave pending an investigation. Because the event happened along a busy thoroughfare police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident to call (619) 667-4100.
