MTS Trolley 'Wrap' Will Highlight La Mesa History
LA MESA -- With fewer than 60 days until La Mesa begins its centennial year, details of the year-long celebration are taking shape and some of the events will surprise.
At a meeting of the Centennial Committee Monday, word arrived that La Mesa will collaborate with the Metropolitan Transit System and all of San Diego will get a regular reminder of La Mesa's event as a trolley wrapped (similar to one above) in honor of the centennial will ride the rails from February 2012 through February 2013.
In another special event, Grossmont Center will attract thousands of La Mesa residents to the top floor of the mall's parking structure to spell out "La Mesa 100'' for a commemorative arial photograph that will be taken by circling drones.
These are just two of a year's worth of monthly events that will begin in February when the city begins celebrating its 100th year.
The committee reported yesterday it has raised more than $130,000 in cash and in-kind contributions, to help the city keep the celebration going all year long.
The Centennial Committee on December 1 launched a separate website to highlight the centennial events and encouraged local residents to check in frequently to find centennial events. Click here to see the site.
Another of the more imaginative events described in Monday's meeting was a "Geo-cache'' event which will attract fans of that geographic pastime to explore in and around La Mesa to find clues, using global positioning devices, that will highlight the history of the city.
