Paint Store Fills A Prominent Gap

LA MESA -- The Ralphs Market next door may be closing, but the opening of the new Sherwin-Williams paint store is giving new signs of life to what has been a struggling shopping center just off Mt. Helix's western slopes along Grossmont Boulevard.
The new paint store includes a design center and a wide array of colors presented in comfortable, well-lit surroundings with more than adequate free parking.
The store had been the location of a tire store until it closed and left both ends of this shopping center empty and tired.
But the eastern end filled up with the new Walmart Neighborhood Market and Sherwin-Williams has now enlivened the western end. With Ralph's closing by February 1 or sooner, that will leave the Ralph's location and the former Linens & Things location still looking for tenants.
In a tough environment for retail, with Internet competition growing quickly, it is not clear where the new tenants will be coming from to fill this space. Local charter schools have been eyeing the locations, but the build-out costs are daunting.
