LA MESA -- Good news for patrons of the popular La Mesa Village restaurant, Swami's. Workers are currently putting on the finishing touches and will soon break through the wall to expand the restaurant by more than 60 seats.
Restaurant manager Arnoldo Barraza said the expansion (shown in progress above) could open within the next two weeks and should immediately eliminate the weekend breakfast and brunch crush that often left fans of the restaurant waiting for tables.
"This should end the waiting,'' Barraza said.
Expanding to take over what had been a real estate office will also give Swami's a back emergency exit from the building and should allow it to increase the seating in their original space.
Swami's, a spinoff from the famed Encinitas restaurant of the same name, opened in La Mesa in 2010 and quickly established itself as one of the best restaurants in the Village. Its arrival was part of a spate of tavern expansions and restaurant arrivals -- including Gingham -- that added some instant life to the Village and Swami's was both good and reasonably priced. It brought counter ordering with fast table service and quickly became crowded, particularly during weekend breakfast and brunch hours.
The additional Swami's space is being built with padded bench seating the lenth of the space's exterior walls and the two buildings will be linked through a large portal that has been cut but not yet opened to the original Swami's side. Final city inspections will determine the exact day the restaurant can begin using the additional seating space, Barraza said.
