Love where you live!
LA MESA -- Art is where you find it and on Saturday you'll find it in an unusual place in La Mesa.
The owners and operators of the Parkway Bar at 9188 Fletcher Parkway are turning the walls of their tavern over to a group of artists, including one of La Mesa's best local artists Billy Martinez.
The barkeeps have signed up more than 20 artists, ranging in age from 14 to "too old to tell" and will share that art with the local community. Two artists, including Martinez, will perform live this evening.
"We are hoping this event will bring art to some people who would not typically engage with it and inspire those that have it as a passion to pursuit their dreams,'' said Katie Halvin, one of the bar's owners.
Art in a tavern may be blaspheme to some, but La Mesa has been developing a nice tendency to find support for artists in new and innovative ways. Cosmos Coffee shop on La Mesa Boulevard is a virtual continuous art gallery now and the Biz Center art gallery on El Cajon Boulevard isn't exactly a traditional art space either.
Billy Martinez is a true local art hero. He runs a small art studio near the Helix Charter High location on University and his space if often filled with young devotees of his anime style of art and his Ecko Press.
On this rainy Saturday, La Mesa artists -- and the Parkway Bar -- are offering a distraction.
And Halvin and her team may have stumbled upon a boost for the art world. After a few drinks, perhaps the art lovers will tap into the tavern tradition and go home with the best looking art they can find!
