LA MESA -- It is very cold back East. Raining in the South. The Midwest is girding for a deep freeze.
Here, it is sweater weather at worst. The marine layer roles in and gives an excuse to light a fire.
As work stops for a few days, we stroll in sweatsuits, seeing seascape in one direction, majestic mountains in the other.
Even as some of us struggle with the challenges of unemployment and career changes, there is always a reason to give thanks when you live in this paradise.
Just a year ago, LaMesaToday.com began chronicling life in this Jewel of the Hills. Already, our files fill with megabytes of local memories and even in these challenging economic times, most memories are good ones: Children laughing and playing, sometimes doing great public service. Citizens talking politics and appreciating the natural beauty of a land that allows mountain hiking in the morning and surfing the same afternoon.
The slideshow we offer here needs no caption, just scenes from across our first year of writing local history's first draft.
Happy Thanksgiving to all La Mesans and those who wish they were.
