Old Pipes Give Way, Crews Rush In

LA MESA -- Harry Truman was president.
Hiroshima was still in ruins.
La Mesa was a small town with open spaces.
That's when the cast iron pipe that carries water along the Upland Avenue, Fresno Street neighborhood was buried in the hillside.

Monday night it finally snapped and sent water running down the street into nearby storm drains.

Helix Water District crews responded around 3 a.m. and by 6:30 a.m. the 1945 era pipe was exposed and repair was underway. District crews said 44 homes were without water and would be that way through early afternoon Tuesday.

Miles of old cast iron pipes are still in the ground and are being replaced, sometimes when a crisis like this demands it.
