LA MESA -- Earlier today, Heartland Fire Chief Rick Sitta was remarking at the spiraling heat in Lakeside as he and his officers began backfilling their ranks in case of a fire.
By 5 p.m., his worst fears had been realized. A wildfire broke out amid the winds and heat of East County. Black smoke billowed above the surrounding hills as fire fighters raced to the scene and began evacuating nearby residents.
The first is located in brush near Aurora Drive and Interstate 8 and by 6 p.m. had added East County to a county fire map that had blazes going from Carlsbad through Scripps Ranch and onto the east.
Sitta said earlier today that 12 of his engine's with crews were up battling flames in the North County as he had back-up crews called in from their off time to prepare the remaining equipment.
