Fire Kills Two Cats, Damages Homes
LEMON GROVE -- At 11:06 Saturday morning, Heartland Fire Communications dispatched a response for a residential structure fire in the 7200 block of Central Ave., Lemon Grove. The first arriving fire unit reported heavy smoke and fire from the rear of a duplex, as well as a person who needed assistance to get from the backyard of the structure to the street.
Heartland Fire & Rescue units from Lemon Grove and La Mesa, as well as units from San Diego, Cal Fire, and Chula Vista had the fire under control within 20 minutes. The male resident who needed assistance was never trapped inside of the structure, but needed assistance due to physical limitations. He was transported to UCSD Medical Center with mild injuries. Two dogs managed to escape the fire, however two cats were found dead. having been overcome by smoke.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. A total of three residences were damaged by the fire. Damage to the structures and contents for all three is estimated at $300,000. Crews were able to limit the fire damage to the one duplex and the adjacent unit, and keep it from spreading to other units due to a well coordinated attack on the fire.
Red Cross will be assisting 5 adults and 2 children as well as the 2 dogs.
