Love where you live!
Lifesighs is open for business! New people are being introduced to my work and I am enjoying the energy of the Village and the friendly people who walk by or come in and buy everyday greeting cards or boxes of Christmas cards or gift books I've written.
I have been giving away copies of two of my books The Adventures of Davey Prickle and What Color's The Baby. Free. I put them in a little kid-sized red wheelbarrow that I bought just for this purpose. The books are two I wrote some years ago and published myself. Because I was new to the book biz back then, I had way, way too many printed and I have been selling them very, very slowly over the years.
When I moved here to 8219 La Mesa Boulevard, I thought about, and now it pains me to say this out loud, I thought about having about half of my books shredded as space was a premium at my new location here and the cartons were so heavy I couldn't think of an easy way of giving them away. But my office manager (and all around wonderful right hand gal) Lori said she could fit them in the store. She was sure she could and showed me a diagram to prove it. Somewhat dubious, I nonetheless trusted her because she is most often right. And once convinced as every carton of books was safely in its place in the store, I knew I would not wake with nightmares of Davey Prickle, the little cactus boy, sobbing inside a shredding establishment when night fell. I wouldn't have to try and drown out the soft cries of Ms. Toast and her daughter Melba and the other Color friends. ( I have a tendency to think of all the people and creatures I write and draw as alive.)
To date I have given away quite a few copies of the books. Lots, actually. Little kids spy them as they walk past, or grandmothers ask if they can have one for their grandkids. Some people look at them and then put them down. That's when, if I can, I dash out and ask them if they would like one. More often than not they know someone who can use a nice happy book.
I suppose there might be some argument to be made that giving away something free dissuades someone from coming inside to make an actual purchase, but that does not seem to be the case so far. Sometimes a birthday card for $1.75 is in order to accompany the free Davey Prickle book. Or a baby shower card to go with the What Color's the Baby book. But that's not my motive. I just like knowing that little Davey Prickle and his pals Hiss and Sissy have a new home, that Mrs. Celery and her son Crunchy, or Mr. Ginger and his son Snap and all the other Colors and their babies are in the caring and good hands of people who love a sweet story.
So if you wander by and see the "Books. Free for little kids" sign, it's because they really are free. It makes me happy to see people take them, because as we all know an unread book is an unhappy book.
Happy December from Lifesighs Cards!!
