Challenged Students Take On Grease
KROC CENTER -- Friday and Saturday at the Kroc Center Theater on University Avenue will be a special time -- a chance for local residents to show support for challenged students and enjoy a show at the same time.
Students with autism, Down Syndrome, ADHD and other challenges will make up the entire 35-member cast of a special production of Grease being put on by Arms Wide Open, an organization of special art students taught at the Rubio's Dance Studio in Rancho San Diego.
"It's just phenomenal what these kids can do,'' said Shari Pomeroy, a mother of one of the performers. "They've been working so hard. It's just an inspiration to see them deliver this show.''
The show is being directed by Chris Rubio, a veteran of Broadway who teaches at the studio and decided that the challenged students who take special classes at the studio should have a show of their own. Parents have constructed the sets and the performers have been working for weeks for this weekend's three performances.
"Renting the theater is expensive,'' Pomeroy said, "so we are hoping the community will come out and fill the seats. You won't regret it.''
Tickets are $12 dollars and are available at the Kroc Box Office at 6611 University Avenue. You can visit the group's website www.awosd.org for ticket information or call Shari Pomeroy at 619-244-2017. Shows are Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.
