LA MESA -- Local and county police authorities are planning extra enforcement efforts to curb drunk drivers during the traditional end of year celebrations. Police are promoting special DUI towing and designated driver services.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says 774 people were killed in California last year as a result of alcohol-related crashes.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department is committed to keeping our roads safe. That means extra patrols and DUI checkpoints all over the county. Police are encouraging local residents to celebrate the festivities with your family, not the in the jail or hospital. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a crime, police remind. You will be arrested.

Each year law enforcement and citizen groups do more and more to try to stem the idiocy of drunk driving. The efforts are applauded yet the morons that stupidly go about the drunken day to day lives, leaving pain and rubble in their paths think absolutely nothing of the efforts or the circumstances of their actions. We all grieve for the pain and death caused by their actions but, I for one, have NO empathy for any accident, incident or pain for the drunk drivers, any of them. I applaud each and every drunk driving arrest, particularly those on and around holidays. That these freaks should get to sit in jail or lay in a hospital for days really brings me joy!
