LA MESA -- A routine traffic stop Sunday morning turned into a high speed chase that left vehicles damaged and a suspect under arrest.
La Mesa police said that just after 8 a.m. an officer attempted to make a traffic stop on a vehicle at El Cajon Boulevard and Baltimore Drive for a traffic violation. The officer recognized the driver as a known subject on parole. When the suspect spotted the officer’s vehicle behind him, he fled the location and failed to yield to officers. A vehicle pursuit ensued.
The pursuit continued eastbound on Interstate 8 and then northbound on the 67 Freeway into El Cajon where the suspect vehicle collided into two vehicles on the Bradley Street off ramp as the driver attempted to exit the freeway at a high rate of speed. The suspect's vehicle was occupied by the male driver and a female passenger who fled on foot following the crash. The San Diego Sheriff's and California Highway Patrol officers assisted La Mesa police with the pursuit and search for the suspects. Both of the suspects were apprehended as they tried to flee the scene. An occupant in one of the struck vehicles was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. No officers were injured during the pursuit.
Sean Bartelson, 34, was arrested and transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital with a complaint of neck pain. Bartelson will be booked at San Diego County Jail on charges of felony evading when he is released from the hospital. His passenger, Chelsea Hill, 21, is facing charges of resisting a peace officer.
