Watchful Neighbor Helps Nab Burglars

LA MESA -- Police are crediting observant neighbors after the arrest of two burglary suspects.

Police said that just after 10 a.m. Tuesday, police received a report from a watchful neighbor who saw two men walking around the Upland Street area looking at residences.

Police responded to the area but the two men had already driven off. Police Officer Daniel Paugh began looking for the vehicle, found it and stopped the two men. While they were questioning the men, police said they received a call from a resident in the 4400 block of Carlin Place that two men had just burglarized her house. Police say they later connected the two men to the crime.

The suspects were identified as 22 year-old Jose Mercado-Gonzales from Imperial Beach and 22 year-old Jeffrey Thomas from El Cajon. Both suspects were booked into San Diego County Jail on one charge of residential burglary.

Police said the case is another example where an early report of suspicious activity by a citizen, helped the police apprehend burglars.
