LA MESA -- There has been a police shooting near Jackson Drive and Center Drive this morning.
San Diego County Sheriff's Deputies, apparently working as part of the Border Crime Suppression Unit, shot and injured a suspect while attempting to enforce a warrant.
Police said a deputy attempting to enforce the warrant was stabbed by a suspect and the suspect was then shot once by a second deputy supporting backup.
At noon today, Sheriff Bill Gore told La Mesa Today he had just visited the wounded deputy in the hospital and reported he was in good spirits. The chief said he apparently was able to back away from the knife attack and sustained a slash across his leg before the backup deputy could fire a shot into the suspect's abdomen. He said the deputy would be okay. Gore said he thought the wounded suspect may survive.
The confrontation apparently occurred near the Chevron station which also features a popular car wash at that location.
The La Mesa police issued a warning to local residents to avoid the area.
