BALTIMORE DRIVE -- Traffic on westbound 8 was shut down just after 8:15 Wednesday night as police negotiators began working to convince a man not to jump from a bridge over the interstate.

La Mesa Police said California Highway Patrol and La Mesa Police were working jointly to handle the situation.  Traffic quickly backed up to Fuerte as motorists either sat on the interstate while others exited at Jackson Drive and looked for other routes to their destination.  Police cruisers also shut down traffic on northbound Baltimore Drive at El Cajon Boulevard. Traffic had remained stalled at 9 p.m.  Police later announced at 9:54 p.m. that the 5000 block of Baltimore Drive was re-opened as negotiators brought the event to an end.

Police did not release the identity of the man nor were any details available as to his motivation.
