Cops Nab Suspect in Sunday Afternoon Robbery

DALLAS STREET – The open season on La Mesa’s gas stations and convenience stores just got a little less open.

La Mesa police at about 3:45 p.m. Sunday received a call that the Shell Station at 9090 Dallas Street had been robbed by a black male who demanded cash and fled in a van.

Officers responding saw a van heading west on Dallas. The van was stopped and police said the driver matched the description of the robber. The suspect was later identified by witnesses as the man who robbed the gas station.

Police arrested 43-year-old Cleon Gilliam and charged him with robbery.

Today’s Shell robbery was one of a string of robberies that have occurred at gas stations and convenience stores along the I-8, 125 corridors in La Mesa. The incidents were frequently similar, though the descriptions of the various robbers – Caucasian, black, Hispanic -- clearly suggested there was more than one suspect hitting these targets.

Police did not say whether Gilliam is a suspect in any of the other La Mesa-area robberies. He was booked into county jail.
