City Staff Agrees With School Size Limits
LA MESA -- The agenda published in advance of each City Council meeting holds some potentially bad news for the families waiting to see if they can join the new College Preparatory Middle School on Jackson Drive.
The agenda includes a recommendation from the Community Development Department to uphold an action by the city's Planning Board that denied College Prep's request to grow.
The new school, just graduating its first group of eighth graders this year, had hoped to add a fifth grade in September and increase the size of the school to about 220 students, 40 above its 180 limit. See earlier story here.
But according to the Council agenda's supporting documents, the Planning Board had judged that if the school's upward limit was raised to 259 students the school couldn't operate within the rules that limit the number of students on the school's playground and outdoor luncheon area. Concern for noise spilling over from the school into nearby residential properties was cited as a potential problem in past considerations of the school's requests to grow.
The recommended action, if approved by the Council, would limit the school to 180 students and probably keep the school from adding fifth grade, at least at this site.
The school is located in the basement of the Church of Christ, just a block or so north of Lemon Avenue on the west side of Jackson.
Speakers are expected to make a case for the council to override the Planning Board's action at next Tuesday's meeting.
