A Call To Celebrate La Mesa's Centennial With
Noisy "Flash Mob" Car Alarms & Horns, Bells, Whistles!
LA MESA -- Wouldn’t it be unique to celebrate La Mesa's Centennial with a synchronized chorus of celebratory noise.
At a pre-determined instant in time, every La Mesa loving resident and their pals would honk their car horns, hit those panic buttons, and/or turn on those obnoxious car alarms. We could even allow the kids, and the kids in all of us adults, to bang pots and pans, hit trash can lids, and perform whatever noise producing methods you can devise.
The production could be setup to last around a minute. What a fine tribute to small town La Mesa! You think the area around the city might hear us? There might even be some news coverage of this most unusual happening. Invented in La Mesa !?!?
I think that a perfect time to orchestrate this non-sense might be after Saturday, February 18th’s photo taking gathering at Grossmont Center. Or maybe at Tuesday, February 14th’s kickoff (although most people won’t be near their cars).
You might have heard of Flash Mobs. From what I understand, they are groups of folks that plan gatherings via today’s high tech cell phones and their applications. You might have seen the TV commercials where the participants, due to various network speed differences, don’t get the announcement in time and end up showing up late for the activity. You know, the worker shows up and says, “Hey did you see that the boss retired?” and then you see the retirement cake is already half eaten…
We could just say to watch your cell phone clocks and when it hits 9:00am sharp, START THE RUCKIS and continue for a minute stopping at 9:01am. Maybe we could solicit help from our local radio/TV stations to get out the word and prompt everyone at the exact moment in time.
I did a little research to find out that the cell phone network systems aren’t sync’d to the second. My Verizon was ahead of Sprint’s network time by about 15 seconds. I’m sure that would be close enough to make this work.
This little episode might resemble what our early settlers used to do on New Year’s Eve. Researching…
My suggestion is to name this event “La Mesa’s Centennial FLASH MOB CELEBRATION”.
What do you think? Crazy enough? You thoughts gratefully requested at contacts below.
Happy 100th Birthday my beloved La Mesa!

I would love to see this happen. Especially if we could get it to happen all over the city and not just at Grossmont Center.
Comment by Bruce Hartman on February 10, 2012 at 10:06am Clever idea, Rick!
Comment by chris shea on February 9, 2012 at 3:51pm Pretty cute little idea! Not sure if it will work out with my schedule, but at the very least, I think I'll turn to the person I'm next to or on the phone with and say,
"Gee. Happy 100th birthday, La Mesa California. Still beautiful after all these years. Cheers!"
