NORTHMONT PARK – La Mesa police say it started with some young men fighting over a girl.

It ended Wednesday with a victim still struggling for life in a hospital and three teens facing felony charges – including attempted murder.

According to La Mesa Police search warrants were executed at three homes as part of an investigation following the late night fight on March 6 in the park near Severin Drive. As a result, Anthony Long, 19, of El Cajon, and two juvenile males from El Cajon and Santee were arrested and charged with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

Police said the investigation started early Saturday morning as two groups of males got into a telephone argument over a girl after a party in El Cajon. The two groups agreed to meet at the La Mesa park to fight.

Long and the two juveniles arrived armed with a baseball bat and golf club and attacked the other three males. One victim was knocked to the ground and repeatedly struck in the head and face with a baseball bat. He sustained multiple head wounds and is still listed in critical condition at Sharp Memorial Hospital.

Long was booked into the county jail. The two juvenile males, not named here because of their ages, were transported to Juvenile Hall.
