A Night Of Song To Warm The Heart

LA MESA -- Writer Bess Streeter Aldrich described one Christmas Eve as “…a night of song that wrapped itself about you like a shawl. But it warmed more than your body. It warmed your heart…filled it, too, with melody that would last forever.”

So will it be this year at the United Church of Christ of La Mesa…

Behold the Star! UCCLM's Chancel Choir Presents the Music of Lloyd Larson

Faith has been defined as a journey from darkness to light – the hope of a Messiah to come in the Old Testament, the star-lit arrival of the Christ Child in the New, the renewed hope of Christmas as we celebrate that birth, the promise of life enriched as we walk with God.

At 10:00am, Sunday, December 15, 2013, the Chancel Choir of the United Church of Christ of La Mesa (UCCLM) will present Lloyd Larson’s cantata, “Behold the…

What Do You See on People's Foreheads?

Today I learned that a man I really, really liked  "got his wings" on September 22, 2013.  His name was Rev. John E. Naus, S.J., a Jesuit priest who served the Marquette University community for nearly  50 years.  He was 89 years old.

What I loved about him--and mind you this was a man I never met in person, only by my cards were we connected-- was his humble and simple joy. That sounds corny, but often real things are corny.  Loyalty.  Kindness.  Hopefulness.  Just ordinary…

Holiday Traditions

From Norway To La Mesa With Love

LA MESA -- It is more than 5,000 miles from Oslo to La Mesa. And on this cool Thursday morning in December, 2011, the women working to holiday music in this garage, tucked down a steep driveway scraped out of the foothills of Mt. Helix, are more than a few generations removed from their Norweigan roots.

Still, as…

A Little Christmas Miracle?

This morning before I headed to meet a friend down at Cosmos, I decided to take a moment and put up a few Christmas decorations.  I took out my nativity scene, purchased over 40 years ago from what was then Marston's or The Broadway in Grossmont Center. It is my favorite decoration and really makes me mindful that Christmas is coming again.

It's one of the decorations that stores, for its relatively small size, a disproportionate amount of Christmas memories for me.  I rummaged around…

LA MESA STARTS PLUGGING IN!

LA MESA -- The first weekend in December is, traditionally, one of the biggest times for La Mesans to start bathing their homes in bright lights and garlands. This year, LaMesaToday.com would like to ask you to help identify the best and the worst of holiday decor in this Jewel of the Hills. To start things off, we honor one of the first "Clusters'' of the season. Clusters are neighborhoods where residents seem to feed off each other's excitement… Continue
