Since last December, I've been engaged in a campaign to legalize backyard chickens in La Mesa. Specifically, I am asking that anyone in a single family home in a residential zone be allowed up to six hens, no roosters, provided they are kept in a clean and well-maintained coop. It's an odd issue to be committed to, for sure. It's not what I ever envisioned as my entry into local politics. And it's gotten some strange responses.
My interest in chickens took off a few years ago, at the… Continue
LA MESA – The City of La Mesa is beginning to plan for its Centennial Celebration in 2012 and so far it appears that Art Madrid, a civic leader for nearly 40 percent of the city’s history, has weathered his political storm and will remain at the helm of local government through the year-long celebration.
With just weeks until residents can file papers to run, a couple of La Mesans are preparing challenges against incumbent council members. Patrick Dean, a former New York City… Continue

The Saturday edition of the U/T reported a planned 8.8% hike in water rates for the Helix Water District (HWD). This outrageous action is another instance of our elected representatives putting the well being of public sector employees above their constituents.
While the HWD Board asks ratepayers for more money, they continue to pay outrageous benefits to their employees. You may remember that only a few months ago the Metropolitan Water District attempted to increase pensions. That action… Continue

LA MESA – Oktoberfest, the city’s annual three-day celebration of beer, sausage and music has dodged a bullet. Members of the Downtown La Mesa Merchant’s Association and the La Mesa Chamber of Commerce attended Tuesday’s City Council meeting prepared to issue a warning: If the City insisted on the Oktoberfest sponsors paying for 100 percent of city expenses related to the event, Oktoberfest’s future could be threatened.
