Banks push home buyers to put down more cash

Many economists and housing analysts blame lax lending standards – including no-down payment, no-document loans – for contributing to the challenges in the current real estate cycle. As a result, most lending institutions have increased minimum down payment requirements. Now, a new proposal by the Obama administration calls for gradually raising down payments to a minimum of 10 percent on conventional loans – those that can be bought or guaranteed by Fannie Mae and Freddie…

Wondering for Two

God, I'm having trouble finding any hope.

I said those words nine years ago this month in the parking lot at Grossmont Hospital, where , on one floor, my father was awaiting serious news about his health and where on another, my mother had recently had surgery.

This was not the way I had ever anticipated things turning out, and in that awareness I know I am hardly alone.  I reminded myself that many people find themselves facing end of life issues, that…

Pebbles against the stone wall

I am just back from the Helix Water District meeting. Their agenda today was pretty large but my area of concern was their labour negotiations, etc. As I sit here I am amazed. Some 260,000 customers go to their mailboxes and extract their water bill each month. It would seem from the monumental turn out that practically all are either totally satisfied with their monthly bills, perfectly happy how the District continues…

My head is spinning!!

Remember when YOUR President clamored, day and night,  attempting to shame and castigating the nation demanding that we "Share The Wealth"? Wait, isnt that "socialism", where everyone must suffer equally whilst the ruling elite continue to amass vast fortunes? Wait, I digress, sorry. Remember when he railed that unless Congress pass the Recovery Stimulus monster immediately our country would sink into the economic mire?…

Online Mortgage Shopping Made Easier

New York Times

The vast amount of information available online about mortgages – such as interest rates, loan benchmarks, prepayment penalties, and the like – can cause home buyers to feel confused and overwhelmed when shopping for a mortgage. Most surprisingly, a recent survey found that only 61 percent of homeowners surveyed said they comparison shopped for a mortgage, and 39 percent said they took out a home loan based on just one quote.

Uh oh. Watch close now!

Years ago whilst visiting Carlsbad Caverns, I was strolling downward through the vista.  I noted what appeared to be a thin crust of material between many of the stalagmites on the floor. (Hope I got that right. I can never remember which is which). This crusty material seemed to be rather a frothy surface, very thin and fragile in appearance and standing several inches above the cavern floor, attached only to the stony…

An Hour Visiting Radio Daze...again

COMMUNITY CENTER -- For an hour Thursday night, the La Mesa Community Center took a step back in time. The La Mesa Arts Alliance hosted its annual fundraiser with a live performance of some of America's most beloved radio shows.

Of Valentines & Envelopes

I don't like Valentine's Day.  Well I don't hate it exactly, but it's not one of my favorite holidays, despite the fact that I'm in the greeting card business and Valentine's Day is a huge money maker for many industries, including greeting cards.  So you'd…

City Looking For A Few Good Drivers

LA MESA – One of the great parts of living in the Jewel of the Hills, everyone agrees, is the rural, small-town feel. Homes are tucked away in quiet glens and secluded hillsides. But without a car, life can quickly become unmanageable.

That’s where…
