A Challenge to the City Council (Delivered at the 3/26 Meeting)

Mayor Madrid and Council members: You may have read an article in the U/T a month or two ago about a program the city of Escondido implemented to reduce the cost of firefighting services - more specifically the cost of Emergency Medical Services. I heard a presentation about this program from the two senior Firemen in Escondido last Friday. Their work, like all fire departments, has increasingly shifted from fighting fires to providing EMT services. Escondido's 2012 calls were:        …See More

A Different Take on Fair Trade

There are a few words such as "fairness" that most of us agree describe proper behavior. It feels good to behave fairly. More than good, being fair even makes us feel a little superior to those who don't think and behave as fairly as we do. Sometimes we go so far as to try to impose our feelings of fairness on those other, less enlightened, people among us. That is what a group of Fair Trade zealots, abetted by the Mayor, is trying to do in La Mesa.         Not content to identify…See More

Thoughts About City Pensions and the Budget

I spoke at the Town Hall meeting tonight urging that we reduce pension costs before they break the bank. Later in the meeting, someone reacted to my comments by defending the pension status quo because our police and firemen are important to the community. I whole-heartedly agree that police and firemen are important to the community and have said so publicly more than once. I agree that the other City workers, in public works and Human Relations, etc. are important to the community. I…See More

Millions, Billions and Trillions

Figuring Out The Really Big Numbers   I am bothered when people use the terms millions, billions and trillions as synonyms - all meaning very large numbers. Impressive Growth In One Sector of Our Economy

The annual update of the CalPers $100,000 pension club (a list of CalPers pensioners receiving more than $100,000 per year) was recently published. It continues to show remarkable growth. The Club had 1,841 members in 2005. By 2009 it had grown to 6,133. 2010 membership was 9,111 and this year's membership is 12,199. That is 99% growth in just the past two years! Current club rolls show Helix Water District with five members, City of La Mesa with seven, and City of El Cajon with 27.…See More

Mr Buckley, you bring out some more very interesting facts about "OUR" Helix Water Distrioct,(HWD) as a Fairly regular attendee and some time Meeting Partisipant at the HWD Board Meetings and as yourself, a concerned Rate Payer I would like to add some INFORMATION that you have MISSED.

If you and any one else really want to make a differance along with being informed as to who on the Board is "WORKING FOR YOU" and what is going on with this current HWD Rate Issue, take a look at the Art. in East County Magaziune Dated June 22 http://www.eastcountymagazine.org/node/3605
it shows how the Board Voted & Info. on the PUBLIC MEETINGS, Places & Times. Public Partisipation is the only thing that may influance the Board, since it is some of the Boards stated position, that if they don't receive the Required Written Objections (by law - 40% of Customers) that they can do as they see Fit (RIGHT or WRONG)

It is my op[nion that this ATTITUDE is another demonstration of some of the Boards continuing lack of "RESPECT" to it's Customers, who OWN the HWD. The Directors have many responsibilities to the District but "DISRESPECT" to it's Customers (REAL OWNERS) of the HWD, is not one of them.

Russell: You probably noted that the San Diego City Council has sued the Pension Board to require increased contributions from employees to help to defer investment losses. Apparently, the City's suit is based on a Charter provision which requires that contributions of the City and the employees be "substantially the same." I do not know if La Mesa has any similar provision, but the event is notable because it represents action by the San Diego City Council to bring pensions under control. It is somewhat unexpected considering the influence that the unions have had on the Council up to now. Perhaps this will assist some members of the La Mesa City Council to realize that the public is now aware of the issue of excessive pensions and benefits for public employees, and that voters desire local government elected officials to enact fair but reasonable benefits for employees which do not overburden taxpayers and cause under-funding of vital services.

Short sales routinely show up in credit reports as foreclosures
Source: Los Angeles Times

Large numbers of homeowners who have negotiated short sales are at risk because of a startling omission in the credit system. Their credit reports and scores indicate that they were foreclosed upon, rather than having negotiated a mutually agreeable resolution with their lender, and the Federal Trade Commission and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau are investigating why and how this happened.
