From the rousing “Battle Hymn of the Republic” to African-American spirituals, the folk songs of Stephen Foster and the heartfelt hope of “When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again,” the music of the Civil War era reflected the lives, faith, dreams and deaths of those who fought – and those who kept the home fires burning. As did their letters.
“My very dear Sarah: The indications are very strong that we shall move in a few days…”
(letter from Major Sullivan Ballou, Union soldier)
“Yes we’ll rally round the flag, boys,
We’ll rally once again,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom…”
“…we made forced marches by night…and for a week slept only one night…no proper food…no water, except what we got from the puddles…”
(letter from John G. Perry, Union soldier)
“There is a balm in Gilead
To make the wounded whole…”
Music for the ages, interwoven with readings of authentic Civil War letters. We invite you to join us for “Shenandoah,” “Beautiful Dreamer,” “I Wanna Be Ready” and many, many more.
