On November 15, 1919, John D. Spreckels drove the “Gold Spike” completing the San Diego & Arizona
Railway, America’s last transcontinental railroad. What an exciting time for Southern California’s history!
In honor of this momentous occasion, the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum has planned a variety of exciting activities throughout 2019 to commemorate this historic event. These events will include a series of celebrations starting on September 7, 2019 and culminating November 16, 2019 (https://www.psrm.org/centennial/).
The initial event at the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum in Campo, CA on September 7, 2019 will focus on the groundbreaking for the San Diego & Arizona Railway. The second, a Centennial Gala Dinner will be held at the John D. Spreckels Center in Coronado on November 1, 2019. Wrapping up the festivities on November 16, 2019 will be a “Gold Spike” celebration and ceremony at the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum in Campo, CA. Visitors from all over will be able to experience music, excursion train rides, reenactments, presentations, food and festivities of the era.
